Charlie Jones Thompson, age 90, died on August 7, 2021 after several years of declining health. He was born in Eatonton, Putnam County, GA and was known by most of his friends and family as CJ. After completing high school, Charlie joined the Marines and proudly received a sharpshooter medal during training. He served as a field radio operator during the Korean War and received three campaign stars.
After completing military service, Charlie went to work for General Motors from which he retired after 30+ years. He and his wife Betty lived in Riverdale, GA, but spent most of their free time in Tallulah Falls, GA. They loved the mountains, so made Tallulah Falls their home after retirement.
Charlie and Betty enjoyed fishing, traveling throughout the US, and gardening. Charlie was especially proud of his roses, and enjoyed sharing fresh tomatoes with his friends. He loved to “cut the fool” as he called it, sharing jokes and making people laugh. He liked the nickname given him by his co-workers: Good Time Charlie!
Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Robert Lewis Thompson and Myrtle Jones Thompson; his wife of 35 years, Betty Ellis Thompson; a sister, Joyce Adams, and a stepson Jimmy Wall. Survivors include his sister Jean (Terry) Sims; brother Melvin (Judy) Thompson; nephew Mike (Sandy) Adams; a great niece Hayley Adams; and a stepdaughter Dolly (Walt) Miller. Additional survivors are his step-grandchildren: Connie (Jeff) Allen, John ( Kendra) Miller, Sarah (Jay) Jones, Amanda (Roger) Crews, and Harry Wall, as well as many great and great-great grandchildren.
